Birgitta Jónsdóttir is a Poetician and a former parliamentarian for the Civic Movement & Pirate Party in the Icelandic Parliament & chairman for IMMI (International Modern Media Institute). Since 2009, Birgitta helped create two political movements: the Civic Movement and the Pirate Party.Since 2009, Birgitta helped create two political movements: the Civic Movement and the Pirate Party. Both parties were successfully elected into the Icelandic Parliament. Birgitta was an Internet Archive Fellow @ the EFF, 2019-2020. She was selected as one of the International Politicians of the Year in 2016 by Der Spiegel and short listed for the WTN awards in policy in 2014. Birgitta specializes in 21st Century lawmaking with focus on direct democracy, freedom of expression, information, and digital privacy within the local and global context. She is an expert on direct democracy and citizen engagement. She is now in a unique position to build bridges between parliamentary bodies and civil society in regard to policies of the digital age.
Birgitta has long been an activist for Earth, for peace, for Tibet, and for Digital Rights. She was a WikiLeaks volunteer and spokesperson in 2010. She played a crucial role in the WikiLeaks release of the Collateral Murder. During her parliamentary work Iceland she was also active in international parliamentary work. She served as a member of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly and the IPU. She was elected to the Human Rights Committee for Parliamentarians at the IPU and successfully proposed and wrote a resolution for the IPU titled Democracy in The Digital Era and The Threat to Privacy. Birgitta is a pioneer in web development and in using creative thinking within cyberspace. She was the youngest poet to be published in a poetry collection for the national education board and her first book of poetry was published by Iceland’s leading publisher. Birgitta has also published her own chapbooks and poetry posters, global anthologies and chapbooks by poets around the world. She has appeared in documentaries and features, including a Hollywood film. Documentaries she has been part of are: WikiRebels, We Steal Secrets, and Meeting Snowden. Birgitta believes individuals can and should change the world.
